11-Year-Old Girl in Prey Veng Dies from H5N1 Bird Flu

PREY VENG: An 11-year-old girl in Prey Veng province died from the H5N1 bird flu on Wednesday, 22 February 2023, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Cambodia.

According to the CDC, the girl fell sick with a fever of 39 degrees Celsius, cough and sore throat on 16 February. The girl's family took her to the local hospital, but her condition did not improve, so they transferred her to the National Children's Hospital in Phnom Penh for further treatment.

On Tuesday, 21 February, doctors took a sample and sent it to the National Institute of Public Health, and the results showed on Wednesday that the girl was positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus.

The girl's family will be holding a traditional funeral ceremony in Sithor Kandal district of Prey Veng province.

The CDC has urged residents not to make contact with sick or dead birds, both domestic and wild. If in doubt, the CDC asks residents to consult a doctor or report suspected cases to the 115 hotline.
